Serpentine arc-en-ciel

Serpentine arc-en-ciel. 3m05. Music & Video-making by Blas Payri. Completed 01/2017. Dancer: Idoya Rossi. Camera: David Linueso. Light: Ximo Rojo. Recorded on 08/2016 at UPV Gandía Campus

Danzas selenitas

A surrealistic dance made for the Selenits, the inhabitants of the Moon.
The selenitic dances (Danzas Selenitas) are based on the concept of subtractive synthesis, both on the music and the image. The music has been created by the composer-videomaker, using tools created ad hoc for subtractive synthesis where sounds change in timbre and energy. The image has also been processed by multilayer difference and subtraction in order to create more abstract lines from the dancers movement, but still maintaining the sense of movement and the pas-de-deux between the camera and the dancer.

Danzas selenitas. 6m. Music & Video-making by Blas Payri. Completed 08/2016. Dancer: Idoya Rossi. Camera: David Linueso.

Movieletter from the Baie d’Yves

This piece was made in response to the Festival delle lettere, movieletters, where the video had to include part of the Letter to the youth of Planet Earth by Jane Goodall. I have used both the voice and the performance of my mother, Murielle Lambert, set in her usual environment of the Baie d’Yves, as she represents the spirit of this letter.

Movieletter from the Baie d’Yves. Video-making by Blas Payri. Performance: Murielle Lambert. Recorded at the Bay of Yves 06/2016. Completed 09/2016.

Preludio a una invocación

This prelude to an invocation uses both the voice and the dance of Rafel Arnal. The music composed by the film-maker Blas Payri is based on the vocables of the religious music of the Caucasus region of Svaneti (Georgia), and both the dance of the dancer, the dance of the camera and the music have a flowing continuum of short phrases.

Preludio a una invocación. 2m30. Video-making: Blas Payri. Dancer: Rafel Arnal. Camera: David Linueso & Lluïso García. Completed 08/2016.

La sublimación

The sublimation is a screendance that relates the transformation of a human being from the petrified position in the ground to the elevation into clarity. Shot in a domestic environment, the image uses inverted colors and continuous transformations to convey the sense of sublimation within the everyday passing of time. The music and the editing have been created by the director, with the goal of adapting the image to the ascending evolution of the music. Both La sublimación and El frío en el alma come from trials for the work Hacia el éxtasis.

Music & Video-making by Blas Payri. From the choreography «Limbo» by Idoya Rossi. Completed 05/2016.

With this project, I got started with screendance. I had been composing for years musical pieces about the visions of Teresa of Avila, and I had been working with video about this with the students of Audiovisual Communication. But it was at the workshop on choreography and music Luogo Comune at Spam! (Porcari, Lucca, Italy), that I finally took the first steps to record and create the first screendance.

Tres visiones de Santa Teresa de Ávila: Arrobamiento – El Demonio – Infierno (Three visions of Saint Teresa of Avila: Ecstasy – The Demon – Hell). 6m40. Music & Video-making by Blas Payri. Selected at International Video Dance Festival of Burgundy, 2016.

Arrobamiento (Ecstasy, alternate 1m version). Music & Video-making by Blas Payri.

Alma escindida

This three-movement screendance was created using some recordings of dancer and choreographer Eva Bertomeu made to study dance movements and emotion expression. It uses music from the visions of Saint Teresa, with a symmetric structure.

Alma escindida: escisión – intranquilidad – unificación. (Split soul: splitting – unease – unification). 5m40. Completed in 09/2015.

Essor mélancolique

Essor mélancolique (Melancholic thrust). 6m41. Completed in 11/2015.Music & Video-making by Blas Payri, after the butô dance by Denis Sanglard.

Lemuriformes

Based on a poem by Emily Dickinson, «ONE need not be a chamber to be haunted; The brain has corridors surpassing Material place.», this screendance explores the mental corridors and interior fears by using both the choreographic and facial expressions of the dancers, in a style inspired by butoh dance, and most of all, by superposing, deforming and dividing the self in the postproduction process.

Lemuriformes (video-dance). 4m10. Music and video-making by Blas Payri after Francesca Valeri’s choreography. Completed 12/2015.

Dancers: Francesca Valeri, Ambra Stucchi, Bacome Niamba.

Trois regards sur Bacome

In this abstract piece in three parts, visual textures, colors and visual composition are created by freezing the movement of the dancer in time. The music has been created with a software developed by the composer with subtractive synthesis techniques, and plays on the evolution of timbre of percussive sounds combined with sustained sounds.

Trois regards sur Bacome (Three glances at Bacome). 4m40. Completed in 01/2016. Music and video-making by Blas Payri. Dancer: Bacome Niamba.

L’obscur Ennemi

The title and concept of this video-dance comes from Baudelaire’s poem L’Ennemi, and particularly the verses « l’obscur Ennemi qui nous ronge le cœur / du sang que nous perdons croît et se fortifie ! » (translatable as « the obscure Enemy that eats into our hearts / from the blood we loose strengthens and grows! » ).

In this video-dance, the movement and the expression comes from both the recorded choreography and the postproduction transformation. It becomes an exploration of transformation, superposition and blurred movement to convey this « Enemy» that is part of us, a consubstantial part of our mind that we project as an exterior force.
